The Welsh Independent Schools Council held its most successful conference to date in October at voco St David’s Hotel, Cardiff. With the largest number of delegates attending in its 12-year history, some fantastic speakers and a great group of different sponsors we knew it was going to be a brilliant networking opportunity for everyone as well as a time to be inspired and supported.

We are always grateful to our lovely sponsors and this year we were particularly pleased to have our Gold Sponsors Rivervale and Assured Partners in attendance, both of whom gave delegates vitally important information in their sponsor presentation spots. Some of our sponsors have been with us for years, others joined us for the first time. Together they created a great atmosphere of connection and collaboration.

Delegates’ feedback showed that the speakers throughout the conference contributed greatly to this best ever conference. They included Lucy Pearson as the keynote speaker, HMI from Estyn who presented on the latest inspection updates and gave delegates plenty of food for thought, and Andrew Jenkins (ex-Traitors) who spoke about mental health.
Representatives from ISC, Julie Robinson (CEO) and Sarah Cunnane (Head of Media and Communications) led relevant conversations regarding the issues currently being faced by the independent sector. Special school directors from the WISC Board also led breakout sessions with opportunity for networking and discussion. A forum consisting of leaders from schools recently inspected provided excellent insight into the new Estyn arrangements.
After five very challenging years for our independent school, this year’s Annual Dinner felt particularly special. It was a chance to reconnect, share stories and, most importantly, have some fun which we certainly did through a brilliant live music quiz courtesy of a fabulous band supplied by Mr and Mrs Grey. Awards were also presented to teachers from our schools who have played extraordinary roles in their settings.

In conclusion, we look back at this conference as a time to celebrate our strength and unity together and to remember our shared purpose.

Look out for more details of next year’s conference which is due to take place on 8th and 9th October 2026 at The Quay Hotel and Spa, Deganwy, North Wales.
