Dr Wall, Head of Prep Science at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School, explores how schools can inspire girls’ confidence and belonging in STEM in his HMC-published article for International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Dr Wall, Head of Prep Science at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School, has been published by the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 11th February.
In his article, Empowering Every Girl to Shape the Future, Dr Wall examines how schools can cultivate girls’ confidence, curiosity and sense of belonging in STEM from the earliest years of education. Writing for a national audience of school leaders, he argues that meaningful change depends on consistent cultural commitment rather than one-off initiatives.
Drawing on his dual background in medical research and classroom teaching, Dr Wall highlights three key levers: visible representation, enquiry-led pedagogy and a school culture that actively normalises challenge, iteration and perseverance. He contends that when girls experience science as collaborative, intellectually rigorous and purpose-driven, they are more likely to see it as a space in which they belong.
At Haberdashers’ Monmouth School, this philosophy is embedded across the curriculum. Pupils regularly lead practical investigations, present their findings at events such as the School Science Fair and are encouraged to approach learning through a cycle of experimentation, reflection and refinement. The emphasis is on developing scientific thinking alongside subject knowledge.
Dr Wall’s contribution also reflects a broader strength within the school: teachers bringing professional experience from beyond education into the classroom. With a background in medical research, he offers pupils authentic insight into the real-world application and impact of scientific study- an approach that aligns closely with current sector conversations around relevance, aspiration and equity in STEM.
His publication by HMC places his perspective within the wider national dialogue on girls’ participation and progression in science.
