Ruthin School is proud to announce the launch of the Gabriel Goodman Award, a new scholarship designed to recognise academic excellence and celebrate the school’s deep connection to Ruthin, North Wales and the Welsh language and culture.
The Gabriel Goodman Award is named in honour of Gabriel Goodman (1528–1601), Dean of Westminster and one of Ruthin’s most distinguished historical figures. Goodman is credited with refounding Ruthin School in 1574, securing its place as one of the oldest and most respected schools in Wales. Throughout his life, he was committed to promoting education, opportunity and public service.
The new Award reflects that spirit, supporting talented young people from the local region who embody academic ambition, community values and a connection to Welsh culture.
The Gabriel Goodman Award is open to new students entering Years 7, 9 and 12, and may be held alongside other scholarships and bursaries. Applicants who are fluent in Welsh, are supporting the Welsh language and culture, or are keen to learn Welsh and contribute to the life of the school, are particularly encouraged to apply.
Frances King, Headteacher, said: “Gabriel Goodman’s legacy is woven into the story of Ruthin School. This Award celebrates that connection and supports the next generation of students who will help shape the future of our school and community. We want to recognise not only academic ability but also a love of learning, cultural pride and a spirit of contribution – the values Goodman himself understood and championed.”
Applications for the Gabriel Goodman Award are now open for September 2025/2026 entry. Full details are available on the school’s website.
