Construction is officially set to begin on a new, state-of-the-art Astro Turf pitch at Rydal Penrhos – a development backed by Sport Wales and Hoci Cymru aimed at transforming grassroots hockey in the region.
Breaking ground on Monday 19th May 2025, the development forms part of an ambitious initiative launched in partnership with Hoci Cymru and Sport Wales last November.
With an expected completion time of approximately eight weeks, the upgraded Astro Turf will serve as the foundation for a new community hockey club, designed to offer inclusive access to state-of-the-art facilities for local teams and aspiring young athletes alike.
The new Astro Turf replaces the existing surface, which has served as a sporting hub for the school for almost a quarter century.
During that time, Rydal Penrhos has emerged as a leading force in Welsh schools’ hockey, repeatedly claiming national honours.
Siteworks are being carefully organised with the interests of pupils, local residents and sporting groups in mind. An official unveiling celebration is planned for September, followed by a programme of outreach events. These include coaching clinics, open days, and hockey workshops – all designed to inspire and engage local people.
Tom Hutchinson, Principal at Rydal Penrhos, said: “Sport builds character, community and confidence – this new Astro Turf will help us deliver all three. The support of Hoci Cymru and Sport Wales has been invaluable, and we’re excited to see our shared vision take shape.”
